フェリス女学院大学では、国際性とコミュニケーション能力を重視した学びをさらに充実させる取り組みの一環として、英語インテンシブ・コースの学びを教室の外へと広げるオンライン交流を実施しました。2026年1月15日、本学の学生はマレーシアのマラ工科大学（Universiti Teknologi MARA: UiTM）の学生と、バーチャル形式での英語交流セッションに参加しました。

本プロジェクトでは、両国の学生がオンラインで英語によるディスカッションを行い、自己紹介や意見交換を通じて、英語でのコミュニケーションに取り組みました。学生たちは英語で互いに交流しながら、自然な会話の流れの中で友人関係を築いていきました。リアルタイムでのやり取りを通して、さまざまな英語のアクセントに触れ、自信をもって英語で話す貴重な機会となりました。

また、文化理解を深めるため、日本とマレーシアそれぞれについてのショートプレゼンテーションも行いました。学生たちは自国の文化に関するテーマを準備し、英語で発表しました。発表後には質疑応答が行われ、互いの文化や価値観について理解を深める時間となりました。この交流を通じて、学生たちは自分の視点を共有するとともに、多様な背景や考え方に触れ、英語で異文化理解を育むことができました。

教育者・研究者として、英語学習は教科書や教室内の練習にとどまるべきではないと考えています。異なる背景をもつ人々と英語で話し、自然な形でやり取りし、自分自身の言葉で表現する経験こそが、真のコミュニケーションだと思っています。今回のプログラムは、学生が学期を通じて身につけてきた英語を実際の「コミュニケーション」として活用し、自らの学びを実感できる機会となりました。

この経験は、実践的な英語教育とグローバルな学びを重視するフェリス女学院大学の教育方針を体現するものです。学生が自信をもって英語でコミュニケーションできるよう成長していくための、意義ある学びの機会となりました。

Learning English Through Global Communication: A Virtual Exchange with Malaysia

As part of Ferris University’s ongoing efforts to strengthen international and communication-based learning, our students recently participated in an intensive English program that extended beyond the classroom through a virtual exchange with a partner university in Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) on January 15th, 2026.

In this collaborative project, students from both countries connected through online English discussion sessions. They introduced themselves, interacted in English, and built friendships through meaningful communication. The sessions provided learners with a valuable opportunity to experience real-time conversation, listen to different accents, and communicate with confidence in an authentic setting.

To deepen cultural understanding, students also prepared short cultural presentations about Japan and Malaysia. They presented their topics to peers in the partner university and engaged in a lively question-and-answer session. This exchange encouraged students to share their perspectives, learn about diverse values, and develop intercultural awareness through English.

As an educator and researcher, I strongly believe that English learning must go beyond textbook knowledge and classroom practice. Real communication happens when students use English with people from different backgrounds, interact naturally, and gain confidence in expressing themselves in their own voices. This project allowed students to apply what they had learned during the academic term and turn their language learning into real communication.

This experience reflects Ferris University’s commitment to practical English education and global engagement, offering students meaningful opportunities to grow as confident communicators in an international context.
